In 1940 he and his wife, their two daughters, and his mother lived at 407 Railroad Street in Lowellville, OH. They were paying $17 a month rent. He worked as a laborer on a street project, and in 1939 had an income of $460.

In 1950 he and Martha and their four children lived in a house on old Route 422 in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, PA. He worked as a track foreman for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad.
