He was a member of Company K, 40th Regiment North Carolina Troops (3rd Regiment North Carolina Artillery). He enlisted at Lumberton, North Carolina on August 27, 1863. He was captured at Fort Fisher, North Carolina on January 15, 1865 and eventually confined a Elmira Prison where he died of pneumonia.

Even though the headstone, and prison records read E.M. White, the records suggest that this is Eli Musselwhite, and that the name Musselwhite was abbreviated M. White with the M. later being interpreted as a middle initial.
