He was captured at Fort Fisher, North Carolina on January 15, 1865 and eventually confined a Elmira Prison where he died of pneumonia.

Even though the headstone, and prison records read E.M. White, the records suggest that this is Eli Musselwhite, and that the name Musselwhite was abbreviated M. White with the M. later being interpreted as a middle initial.
