"Bert" attended rural Iowa schools, graduated from Friends' Academy in LeGrand, Iowa. He taught in several Iowa rural schools, and later in ND. He married Maude McLain Mar 24, 1898 at Laurens, Iowa. In 1901 they moved from Laurens to Clark Co, SD and farmed near Bryant, SD. In Dec 1903 they moved to ND, homesteading 18 miles west of Ellendale near the future town of Forbes. Bert served in the ND legislature for 18 years while farming, 1917-24 as state rep from Dickey Co. In 1924 he was elected to the state senate for 12 years, and elected presiding officer in 1935. In 1936 he resigned to accept appointment by Sec of Agriculture Henry Wallace as chairman of the ND State Agriculture Adjustment Act committee, a federal office. He served as president of the Farmers State Bank of ND, one of 2 banks in Forbes, until they merged during the Depression, then he was vice president. He served as director of Forbes Equity Exchange 1915-56, a farm coop organized in 1913. In 1943 Bert was appointed by the governor to the State Board of Education and reappointed in 1950 at age 80 and served almost 3 years when he married Mabel Lindgren in 1952 and moved to Seattle.
She died in 1962 and he returned to ND.
