Son of Thomas Henry Sutherland and Mary Ann Timmings. George Q. Cannon assisted the family with funds to emigrate. They sailed on the ship "Amazon" from London's Shadwell Docks with 900 saints under the direction of William Bramall. Took Northern route through New York because of unrest during civil war. Immigrated to Utah with Horton D. Haight Company in 1863. Also came with wife Francis Slater, child George, and his mother Mary Ann. Alexander and Frances had 6 children. Their oldest child George became Justice of the Supreme Court.
Alexander and Fannie separated, though never divorced, when he had become interested in another woman and moved to California. In 1896 he moved back to Salt Lake, and resided as a boarder with Julian Riley, until failing health caused him to move in with his youngest son Fred, where he died July 31, 1911. His funeral service was held by the Masons.
