Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He began his service in the Union Army when he enlisted in a Illinois militia company that became known as Barker's Chicago Dragoons, after the officer who recruited it. Mustered in as a Sergeant in April 1861, he served with the company in what would later become West Virginia, taking part in the July 1861 Battle of Rich Mountain. The militia unit would eventually become a three-year enlistment company, and in late 1862 became part of the 12th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. Thomas W. Grosvenor was commissioned Major of the 12th Illinois on September 4, 1862, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and commander on August 11, 1863. He would lead the regiment through the rest of his service, and was honorably mustered out on August 3, 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". His grave in Oak Woods Cemetery is unmarked.
