Army Staff Sgt. Dorrity was assigned to E Co, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Dorrity was killed in an MH-47E crash during a training exercise in the Philippines. He leaves behind a wife and two children. James' father was in the military so the family moved around a lot. He considered North Carolina his home and always came back for family reunions and gatherings. He enlisted in the Army in 1986 as a Medium Helicopter Repairman (67U). He attended Basic Combat Training (BCT) at Fort Dix and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Eustis, Virginia. In July 2001, he was assigned to Echo Company, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) as a Flight Engineer. He was a Night Stalker and deployed with his unit to multiple locations across the Pacific Command in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. James was a person who was full of life. When he would talk to his family on the phone, he would give no indication of the danger he would be involved in because he didn't want them to worry about him. In one of the last calls to his family, they told him how much they appreciated and were praying for him. He thanked them and said he didn't mind having people pray for him.
