MONROE — Mrs. Biggers, 99, of the Fairview Community in Union County, NC, died Monday. April 17, 2006 at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home, Charlotte, NC.

Wattie was born in Unionville, NC on January 9,1907 daughter of the late James Watt and Amelia Jane Baucom Hargette. She received a teaching degree from Woman's College (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1928 and taught in Union County, NC public schools for thirty years. Her career began as an elementary teacher in Olive Branch, NC. After marriage she taught at Brief School. Brief, NC until it closed in 1934. When Fairview School was built in 1935, she transferred there and taught in elementary grades until retirement in 1959. After retiring she did volunteer work conducting reading and storytelling programs in many Union County Elementary Schools.

Wattie was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, and worked on numerous committees and church projects. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of the church.

For many years she was actively involved in school and community activities and fund-raising projects. She was a long-time member of the Union County Library Board and supported reading programs for Union County students.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hoyle Biggers; a son Kee Biggers; a former daughter-in-law, Kathryn Adams, a granddaughter, Kathy Ashley and five sisters; Wilma Griffin, May Biggers, Ruth Chaney, Faye Guion and Jimmie Ellerbee.

She is survived by two sons, James H. Biggers Jr. (wife) Betry from Greenville SC. and John Alan Biggers (wife) Pat of Matthews NC; five grandchildren: Keena Rogers (husband) Chris of Lexington SC; Jenny Biggers Goodman (husband) Joe of Savannah GA; Scott Biggers (wife) Lisa, of Walhalla SC; John Biggers (wife) Tracy of Matthews NC; Leigh Zimmerman (husband) Billy of Charlotte; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, April 2(1, 2006 at Hopewell Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
