William Joseph "Billie Joe" De Vries
William Joseph "Billie Joe", 86 of Green City, Missouri passed away Saturday morning, October 30, 2010 in the Milan Health Care Facility in Milan, Mo.
The son of Martin De Vries and Florence Josephine (Riley) De Vries he was born October 18, 1924 in East St. Louis, Illinois. On May 16, 1946 he married Vaunda Ilene Moddrell who preceded him in death on May 2, 2010.
Also preceding him in death were is parents; his stepfather, Herbert Jackson Goad; one son Martin Lee De Vries on June 17, 1947, a sister Annie Casper on February 26, 2007, and a son-in-law, Kenneth Neely on August 16, 2007.
He is survived by two daughters, Jo Lynn Neely of Green City and Frances Ann of Milan; Randy Kincanon of Green City who was like a son to Bill and Vaunda; three grandchildren, Michelle Pickett and fiance Terry Parr of Knob Knoster, Heather Jaques and husband Darin of Milan, and Martin Neely and wife Debbie of Unionville; seven great grandchildren, Jennifer and Brad Lunsford, Jared and Courtney Sizemore, Jennifer, Elisha, Joshua and Joel Pickett, and Miles Jaques; and four great-great grandchildren, Destiny, Hunter, and Olivia Lunsford, and Jayden Sizemore.
Bill graduated from Green City High School in 1942. He served with the US Army in World War ll from March 1943 to January 1946 earning an Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, World War ll Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
Following the war, he was employed as a truck driver, a sales clerk at the family drug store, a clerk at the Sale Barn, and was a rural mail carrier in the Green City and Green Castle areas from February 11, 1954 until November 2, 1984.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Green City where he served as an Elder, Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School teacher and a member of American Legion Post #365.
Bill enjoyed golfing, playing cards, camping, going to the cassinos (winning of course), visiting at the deer camp, watching sports, and going to the Missouri State Fair with his family. He was also an avid coin collector.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in the Glen E. Kent & Son Funeral Home in Green City. Andy Woods and Rolf Christen officiated. Music was provided by Kirk Lorence, soloist and Phyllis Jobe, pianist. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Casket Bearers were Randy Kincanon, Martin Neely, Darin Jaques, Bill Embree, John Jobe and John Payne. Honorary Bearers were Pat Kincanon, Joe King, James Beall, Bill Casper, Steve Kincanon, Eldon Harrison, Robert Young, and Kyle Kent. Military Rites at graveside was provided by American Legion Post #365.
