The son of George Tough and Sarah Hay. George came to Canada with his brother, Henry, his mother, Sarah Hay (the widow Tough) Hendry, his stepfather John G. Hendry, half-sister Sarah and half-brothers, James, and John. Also was with them was William F. Hendry a nephew of John G. Hendry. They all came from the Parish of Oyne about 1868. They first settled near Fergus then George moved to Grand Valley and was a tailor there for many years with a shop on the Main St.

George married Bertha Rebecca Royce on 13 May 1875 at Eramosa Twp., Wellington County, Ontario. They had children named Robert Royce, Lillian Mae, Lydia Eliza and a stillborn baby girl who apparently was never named.

George was the president of the Disciples of Christ church in Grand Valley. He died of cerebral hemorrhage and senility.
