Gregory was born and raised in Billings and lived there all of his life, until he enlisted in US Navy 3 August 1965, at a recruiting office in Billings, Montana.
When Gregory arrived in Vietnam 15 July 1967, he was assigned to Combined Action Platoon Echo-2, Combined Action Company Echo, 2nd Combined Action Group, 3rd Marine Amphibious Force.
Gregory was with the Echo 4 Reaction Force west of LO Giany (1) and 5 kilometers south southeast of the Danang Air Base, when the Marine unit was engaged by hostile forces. Gregory died as a result of a gunshot wound to the body from hostile rifle fire.
Gregory served his country for 2 years.
Survived by his step-father and mother, Darrell P and Victoria Shalley, and his brother of 936 Yale Avenue, Billings, Montana, and his father; Kenneth L Gifford of unknown address.

Obituary, Billlings Gazette, published Monday, Feb. 12, 1968:
"Billings Medic Killed in Vietnam"
Gregory A. Gifford, 19, son of Mrs. Darrel P. Shelly, 936 Yale St., was killed in action Thurday near Da Nang, South Vietnam.
He was a Navy hospital corpsman servinge with the U.S. Marines.
He was graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1966. He went to Vietnam last July.
Surviving are his mother and step-father; a brother, Geoffrey Gifford; a maternal grandmother, Mrs. V.E. Sampsel, 208 Wyoming Ave., and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Gifford, Hemet, Calif.
Billings Mayor Willard E. Fraser has ordered the city's flags to fly at half-staff for Gifford and has asked Billings residents to fly their flags the same way until after the funeral.. Services and burial have not been set.
