Married: Loretta Lawson. Later divorced. She died sometime before 1962 and is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Long Branch, New Jersey. One son, John, born 1924 in Rockford, who died Oct. 1975 in California of cancer.

Military: Served in World War I (records not found), U.S. Army Signal Corps.
Served in World War II with the Iowa Tec 5, 56th Armored Infantry.

As a civilian he served on the Civil Service Police Force in Honolulu, Hawaii and owned and operated Dryman Collection Agency in Honolulu.

He was also a semi-professional wrestler from 1935 until his enlistment in 1941 and one year in 1944, using the name of "Whitey Govro". Other aliases were "Mighty Govro" and "Lee Govro". He had 90 semi-pro matches in his career and traveled the entire U.S. He was considered the bad guy, referred to in local papers as "Mason City's own bad actor", "Mason City bone crusher", "Mason City bad man", "the hometown villain". His hometown matches were to sellout crowds.
Before his wrestling career, he was also briefly a boxer from 1928 to 1930, 5 matches in the Heavyweight Division. His base was Greenville, Mississippi and his boxing record was 4 KO wins, 1 loss.
