Son of Thomas and Louisa (Gaillard) Hunt.
Graduated from the College of South Carolina, 1825.
Admitted to the SC bar, 1828. Moved to New Orleans, 1833.
In 1840 and '42 elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. In 1847 became professor of law at University of LA (now Tulane). Became University president in 1867.
Elected to LA Senate, 1860. In 1866, elected to the US Senate.
Married 12 Jul 1854 Ruhamah "Amy" Ludlow (1833-1913).
