Mr. Curtis A. Newbern, 88, Florence, died Friday, May 21, 2004. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Greenhill Funeral Home, with burial in Mitchell Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday at the funeral home.He was an educator and educative administrator and Bible class teacher and elder at Appleton Church of Christ.Officiating at the funeral will be Russell Dickerson.He was a native of Anderson, Ala.He is survived by his wife, Mabel Newbern, Florence; son, Thomas Newbern (Joy), Florence; daughter, Joan Stutts (Jack), Killen; grandchildren, Tony Newburn, Angelia Bartlette, Tina Oakley and Tamsie Wilson; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Frances Newbern, father, Charles Newbern, sisters, Susie Goode, Lois Tomlinson, Wila Mae Grisham, Blanche Newbern, Lee Gladney; brothers, Coy Newbern, Frank Newbern, Ralph Newbern and Vernon Newbern.Pallbearers will include Rip Ridgway, Randy Cain, Bob Boyd, Gary Pierce, Bud Durham, Mike Wilson, Pat Ezell and Tim Ezell.He was a teacher and school administrator for Lauderdale County Schools. He was a member of Appleton Church of Christ, Appleton, Tenn., AEA, NEA, LCEA, Principals Association, Retired Teachers Association and Lauderdale County Teachers Credit Union Board of Directors.He taught adult Bible classes and served as a song leader and elder of Appleton Church of Christ. He was an NEA delegate and past president of LCEA and Retired Teachers Association.
