The former Meta Schuler was born March 3, 1895, in the town of Rhine, daughter of Henry and Mary Stallmann Schuler. She attended district school in Rhine.
She married Oscar Mertens on Sept. 15, 1917 in the town of Rhine. The couple lived in Elkhart Lake until 1926 when they moved to Kiel. They operated the Kiel Chicken Hatchery until Mr. Mertens’ death in 1957. Mrs. Mertens was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Kiel.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Ilagene) Salzman of Shawano, Mrs. Raymond (Mutzee) Sadowski of Kiel; one grandchild; one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Fahres of Sheboygan; and one brother, Fred Schuler of Manitowoc. Five brothers and two sisters, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at Meiselwitz Funeral Home in Kiel. The Rev. John Baumann, pastor of St. Peter UCC, will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Elkhart Lake.
