Joan Monica WIEDNER

Joan M. Newton, 84, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Nov. 14, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born May 4, 1926, in Volga, daughter of Charles J. and Hallie Allen Wiedner.

She married Robert L. Newton on Sept. 30, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Volga. He died July 5, 1987.

Mrs. Newton graduated from Volga High School and received her teaching degree at Iowa State Teachers College.

She taught in Postville, Strawberry Point and Gunder.

She got her nursing education through Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids during the war.

She was employed at Rath Packing Co., Senior Employment Program through A.A.R.P., Allen Hospital and Hy-Vee on Logan Avenue.

Survived by: four sons, Charles "Chuck" (Deb) of Cedar Rapids, Thomas of Waterloo and currently deployed to Afghanistan, Curtis (Nancy) of Cedar Falls and Bruce (Kim), also of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bill (Rosie) of Waterloo, Paul (Faye) of Wright City, Mo., Harold of Maynard and Bob (Brenda) of Elkader; four sisters, Zola (Bill) Podaril of Mesa, Ariz., Jackie Morgan of Waterloo, Dr. Faylene Bruns of Farmington, Minn., and Lanette (Larry) Larson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nephews and nieces.

Preceded in death by: a son, Joseph; two sisters, Charlene Wells and Lois Smith; and two brothers, Joe and Charles.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion of Mary rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to American Cancer Society, Cedar Valley Hospice, G&G Living Center in Guttenberg or American Red Cross.
