Captured 13 Aug 1862 in Linn Co. & sent to Alton, IL, transferred to Johnson Island, OH & was exchanged in Vicksburg, MS. His health was very bad & he d. 8 Dec 1862. James was b. in 1835 & is buried in the Confederate Section of the city Cem at Vicksburg, MS = tombstone Oakland Cem;" [Ref: Shades of Gray, Randolph County CSA Soldiers & Veterans, by Neil Block, p. 35].
