He married Betty Almeda Ballance on September 12, 1951 in Boise, Idaho. Although he had been a "Jack of all trades", he graduated from Moler Barber College in Portland, Oregon and was a practicing barber and auctioneer. He loved the rodeo and outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing or camping. He was always one who read the newspaper from front to back and enjoyed being involved in the community. He was a past member of the Lion's Club.
He raised two daughters, Retha F. Gryder, and Ronda (Jack)Crow of Baker City, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hiram, and a baby sister, Charlotte Yvonne.
He died December 5, 1970 in Union, Oregon from a gunshot wound.
