Son of John B. and Mary C. Downing. Thomas moved to Kansas in 1877 with his parents at age nine, and helped on the family farm near Wichita. In 1891 he married Rosa Belle Stephenson, and they made "the run" on the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma in 1893, homesteading 160 acres near Medford. Thomas died of influenza during the great influenza epidemic of 1918.
Thomas and Rosa had eight children. Numerous descendants are in Oklahoma and Kansas today.
