WELLS, Vt. Bernard F. Capron, age 93, passed away at his home on Sunday, January 8, 2006. Bernie was born on August 11, 1912 in Rutland, Vt. the son of Claude and Gladys (Morse) Capron. Bernie worked as a slate maker for 78 years in many quarries in the valley. He also worked at General Electric in Rutland and was a rural mail carrier in addition to running a small farm in Wells. He spent his 90th birthday making slate at Newmont Slate Co. and retired soon after. Bernie and his wife, Amelia, were always known for their generosity in caring for many people in need by providing a meal and, in many cases, a place to stay and no one was ever turned away.

He was a member and past consul of the Modern Woodmen of America in Wells and a former Justice of the Peace. Bernard was a communicant of St. Mary's Church of Granville. Bernie was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Amelia L. Capron. Survivors are his four sons and their wives, Fred and Charlotte of Fair Haven, Vt., David and Jane of Queensbury, N.Y., Joe and Patricia of Wells and John and Diane of South Bethlehem, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Bernard Jr., Kelle, Debra, Jen, Christopher and his wife Margaret, Arron and his wife Erin, Dan and Julie; and four great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Amelia Rose, Robert Arthur and Maxfield Capron. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the Wells Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Wells Building Fund or St. Mary's Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St. Granville, N.Y.
