Carley Newcity, Jr. SHARON-Carley R. Newcity, Jr., 74, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction. He was born May 28, 1927, in Stowe, the son of Carley R. and Ruby (Twombly) Newcity. He attended school in Hyde Park and Morrisville. He joined the US Navy and served with the Seabees in Guam during World War II. He married Nora LaPlant May 12, 1950, in Barton. They moved to Sharon and he drove a truck for Petco Oil for a time. He later worked as a poultry inspector for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and lived in New York and Maryland. He moved back to Vermont and went to work for the Vermont Department of Agriculture as the first state meat inspector. They lived in Sudbury from 1970-78. In 1978 he returned to live in Sharon and worked from Montpelier as a Compliance Officer until retiring in 1990. After retirement, he became more involved in Newcity Auto Sales, selling used cars, something he had done all throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching sports on TV. In his younger years, he was a Golden Gloves boxer and played town team baseball in Sharon for many years. He was a member of the Hartford B.P.O. Elks Lodge 1541 in Hartford, the Veterans' of Foreign Wars Post 2571 and American Legion Post 26, both in White River Junction. He was also a past member of the Masonic Lodge in South Royalton. He is survived by his wife of Sharon; five sons: Gaylord B. and Lance E., both of Hartford, Darcey A. of Sharon, Shawn E. of Hartland and Victor D. of Norwich; six grandchildren; two brothers, Richard of Stowe and Wallace of Brownsville; three sisters, Elaine Brochu of Colchester and Sandra Holmes and Linda Lewis, both of Bethel; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Theodore Newcity. Calling hours were at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction, Feb. 17. A funeral service was held at the funeral home Feb. 18. Burial will be in the spring in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Silver Towers Camp in care of Hartford Elks, P.O. Box 502, Hartford, Vt., 05047; or Brookside Nursing Home Activities Fund, 120 Christian Street, White River Junction, Vt., 05001. Rutland Herald (VT) - May 12, 2002 Deceased Name: Carley R.
