Dr. Johnston Dies Today at Hospital
Shoots Self in Head With Revolver At Home This Morning
Dr. W. A. Johnston, 70, a veterinarian in this city for the past thirty-five years, died at 11:25 o'clock this morning in the St. Vincent Hospital. Doctor Johnston, who had been in ill health for several years, shot himself in the temple with a revolver at his home about 9:30 this morning.
A native of Christian County he was born May 15, 1875 in Johnson Township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Johnston. He attended school in this city and a veterinary school in Chicago, returning to this city 35 years ago to follow his profession. He was married on September 18, 1901 to Miss Emma Duvall.
Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Martin, wife of Dr. Joe Martin and three grandchildren, Dianne, Donnie and Camille Martin. He also leaves a half-sister, Mrs. John M. Bond and a half-brother, Orville Wilson, both of California. He was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Coroner Sidney Stilts will conduct an inquest into his death.
The body was removed to the Chestnut and Pearce Funeral home where friends may call and where funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. Rev. Arthur S. Chapman, pastor of the Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
