During the third week of January, 1919, the death angel visited the home of Mr.
and Mrs. H. M. Todd, and took away their five children in the home. The names
are as follows: John Dawsey Todd, age 8 years 5 mo., 26 days, Wate Decol Todd,
age 15 years 13 days, Lula Bert Todd, age 12 years, 4 mo., 20 days. The above
died Jan. 20, 1919. Ottie McLean Todd, age 10 years, 4 mo., and 1 day, Willie
Mace Todd age 16 years 3 mo., and 22 days. These two died Jan. 22, 1919. Mr.
and Mrs. Todd have endured that which few people of our county have, and readers
think they have borne all this trouble and patience that calls to mind Job as of
old, when he suffered all his to be taken and calmly said: “The Lord gave, and
the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
All five children were pupils of the Shell school, where we sadly miss them for
they were kind and obedient scholars, winding a tender chord of love around the
hearts of both Teacher and classmates. They were only sick a few days with
influenza, which ran into pneumonia, causing their early death. Mrs. Todd also
had a stroke of same, recovering after sometime.
The works of the Lord are wonderful. We weak creature are not to understand.
He works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. He plants His footsteps in
the sea. He rides upon the storm and I trust He will be with and comfort the
loved ones, and guide them to that bright shore, where they will be reunited.
The bodies were laid to rest in the cemetery at Bethlehem Church beside the
three little sisters who preceded them to the grave a few years ago.
Loved ones in your sorrow and your loss we deeply feel, but tis God who has
bereft you, He can all you sorrows heal.
They are sleeping, only sleeping,
All their trials have been borne;
Resting in their Father’s keeping
Till the Resurrection Morn.
Their Teacher
