Mary Elizabeth Stratton was born on 23 December 1830 in Dalton, Georgia. She was the daughter of Asa Evans Stratton and Mary Graves Alexander. The family moved to Panola County, Mississippi in 1836.
Mary wed James Evans Stratton, her first cousin, on 01 December 1847 in Panola County. James was a son of her uncle, Andrew Stratton. James and Mary had six children, four born in Panola County. The other two children were born after they migrated to Texas, settling in Bastrop County.
James died in on 08 October 1864 in DeWitt County, Texas where he had bought land in 1862. Mary married James Mahood. The 1870 census shows James Mahood was 58 years old and was born in Pennsylvania.Nothing else is known of James Mahood and Mary next turns up living with her sons, Henry Ward and James, in Williamson County, Texas in 1880.
Mary moved with her son Henry Ward to Brown County, Texas. She died in Bangs, Texas at the age of 78 years on 10 April 1910. She is buried in the Salem Cemetery, west of Bangs.
