Professional Hockey Player. For eleven seasons (1941 to 1943, 1945 to 1954), he played at the left-wing position in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens. His lengthy career in the sport began in 1939 with the Port Arthur Bruins of the TBJHL, followed by the Tornonto Marlboros and Hershey Bears; he was promoted to the NHL with Toronto during the 1941-1942 postseason, and was part of their Stanley Cup championship team. The next season Stewart flourished, as he scored 24 goals with 23 assists, earning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie. His career yielded to his service in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He returned in 1945, and wasted no time resuming his dominance in the NHL as a scoring threat; he recorded 37 league-leading goals in 50 games during the 1945-1946 season. Stewart would earn a second ring as a member of the 1946-1947 Maple Leafs' Stanley Cup Champions; he contributed 2 goals and 5 assists in 11 games during that postseason. He was dealt to Chicago early the following year, and produced three consecutive 20-or-better goal seasons with the Black Hawks. In 502 career regular season games, Stewart amassed 185 goals with 159 assists, and earned NHL All-Star status four-times (1947, 1948, 1950, 1951). He extended his hockey career an additional season (1954-1955) with the Buffalo Bisons of the AHL, before retiring in 1955.
