Obituary:
Phoebe Stephens. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Hall-Van Hook Funeral Chapel for Phoebe Murria Stephens, 87, who died Thursday at a local hospital. She was born July 10, 1897, in Caro, Mich. to Daniel and Susa Norton. In 1904, she came to California with her parents and grandparents, and they resided in the Vina and Corning areas. On March 26, 1915, she married Samuel David Stephens (actually Samuel Henry Stephens) in Sacramento. Following their marriage, the Stephens' resided on the Singer Creek Ranch, operating a dairy and raising hogs, sheep and chickens. Mrs. Stephens worked for Charles Diccus cutting peaches and at Enloe hospital as a nurse. The Stephens' moved to Chico in 1942 following a fire at the ranch. They then operated a cattle ranch on Mulberry Street. Her husband died in 1944, and in 1948 she married Orville Lloyd Stephens. They continued to operate the cattle ranch until retiring in 1968. Mrs. Stephens was a life member of the Pine Creek Grange and a member of the Cow Belles of Chico. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews in the Chico will officiate at the service. Wava Backlund will play the organ and Ron Palmer will sing "In the Garden" and "A Closer Walk with Thee." Burial will be in the family plot at the Pine Creek Cemetery. Casket-bearers will include Robert Metcalf, Ken Brown, Daniel Norton Jr., Mike Blankinship, Sidney Small and Jerry Lee Stephens. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and until 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the coronary unit at Enloe Hospital.
