James entered the military service at the age of 17 to fight in World War I. He married Pansie Pricilla Varner circa 1937 in Winston County, Mississippi. They later separated, then divorced. James was a Watkins Products salesman, worked in the coal mines, sharpened saws at a sawmill, then was a brakeman for Southern Railroad. He was killed in an auto accident.
