The Acrees of this area are descended from William Acree who came from Virginia to Bettie Co., N.C., then to Wilkes Co., Ga. soon after the Revolutionary War. As a soldier in the Revolution, he received large tracts of land in Franklin Co., Ga.

April 29, 1919 Stephens Co., Ga. daughter of Russell and Mary Yarbrough Banks. James Knox Acree came to Haberhsam Co. (now Stephens) from Banks Co. in 1877. he became a prominent farmer and a leader in all community activities. When Stephens County was formed in 1906. he was one of the first members of the County Board of Education and also was a members of the county's firs Democratic Committee. he was a loyal member of Tate's Creek Baptist Church and was a Deacon and Supt. of the Sunday School.
