Friends set up benefit for late Buck Naked
HOPING to raise enough money to release an album already in the can, friends of Phil Bury -- known as Buck Naked -- will appear tomorrow at Slim's. Bury was shot to death in the early morning hours two weekends ago while walking his dog in Golden Gate Park, after returning home from work as a bartender at the Paradise Lounge.

Last weekend, he was remembered in a four-hour informal memorial at the 11th Street nightclub where he last worked. The event was attended by nearly 1,000 friends and fans, but his real tribute should come tomorrow at Slim's with appearances by Those Darn Accordions, the Muskrats, the Gone Jackals and Pearl Harbour, the band he was working with at the time of his death.

''Buck handpicked all the musicians,'' said Pearl Harbour, the diminutive singer with the giant beehive hairdo who fronts the band that had played only six shows before Bury was killed. ''He was a real good guy, always entertaining. Rehearsals were always fun with him. He looked like what he was -- a cartoon character.''

Indeed, Bury made singing demented rockabilly in nothing more than a cowboy hat and strategically placed plumber's friend seem like a most natural, even wholesome enterprise, so good-natured and offhand was his manner. In the cavalcade of characters that stock the pond of the local music scene, Buck Naked always will be one for the books.
