United States Army Officer. He attended Aquinas Institute (high school) in Rochester, New York. They named their stadium in his honor. He attended West Point Military Academy and was a star football player for the Army team from 1953-55. He played defensive end and quarterback. His football exploits won him election to the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame. West Point honored him by naming their hockey and basketball arena 'Holleder Center.' Donald was killed in action in Vietnam by a sniper in the Battle of Ong Thanh while voluntarily leading a rescue effort in a battle that pitted 142 Americans against 1,400 enemy troops who had the protection of underground bunkers.
