Donald 'Don' Theodore Shumate
Donald "Don" Theodore Shumate, also known as the "Old Shue," 90, of Kitty Hawk, died at Spring Arbor on Nov. 10.
Born in Washington DC, he was the son of the late George and Nora Shumate and the husband of Betty Jo Shumate. He also was predeceased by his brother Lloyd Shumate and two sisters Lucille Scott and Dorothy Hall.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and following the war worked in private construction. He took a position as a director for Fairfax County, Virginia until he retired to Kitty Hawk in 1984.
He was a man of many talents and varied interests. He was a musician who played for the Washington Redskins band, a sportsman and avid fisherman, a gardener, a craftsman and woodworker, a volunteer with the Coast Guard auxiliary.
Also surviving are two daughters Donna Buxton and husband Ralph Buxton of Nags Head and Cynthia Nelle Knirsch and husband Al Knirsch of San Antonio, Texas; a son Ronald Wayne Shumate of Prescott, Arizona; five grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Shumate and wife Esther Marie of Fresco, Calif.; and three sisters Gloria Butts of Auburn, NY; Barbara Hood of Falls Church, Va.; and JoAnn Ferryman of West Bloomfield, Mich.
The funeral service was held on Nov. 15 at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church with Pastor Curtis Campbell officiating. Interment with military honors was at Southern Shores Cemetery.

Donald "Don" Theodore Shumate, affectionately known as the "Old Shue," a long time resident of Kitty Hawk, NC passed away at Spring Arbor on November 10, 2010. Don was born on November 25, 1919 in Washington DC, son of George and Nora Shumate. He was raised in Upstate New York, with seven brothers and sisters: It was here he developed a love of the outdoors which lasted a lifetime. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Betty Jo Shumate; two daughters Donna Buxton and husband Ralph Buxton of Nags Head, NC, and Cynthia Nelle Knirsch and husband Al Knirsch of San Antonio, TX, and son Ronald Wayne Shumate of Prescott, AR; and five grandchildren Charles Buxton, Elizabeth Buxton, Samuel Buxton, Terra Knirsch, and Jessie Knirsch. He is predeceased by his brother Lloyd Shumate and two sisters Lucille Scott and Dorothy Hall. He is survived by one brother, Gordon Shumate and wife Esther Marie of Fresco, California, and three sisters Gloria Butts of Auburn, NY; Barbara Hood of Falls Church, VA; and JoAnn Ferryman of West Bloomfield, MI. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don was a Navy veteran of World War II, and following the war worked in private construction. Most of all he was a lifetime learner and a lover of life. If you met Don as a stranger, he left you laughing as a friend. The funeral service will be held Monday November 15, 2010 at 11 am at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. Pastor Curtis Campbell will officiate. Interment with military honors at Southern Shores Cemetery will follow immediately after the service. Gallop funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
