His parents moved early to the Wyoming Valley area, where Jabez was born. One report states that Cornelius was originally called on to serve the defense of the Wyoming Valley, but Jabez demanded he go in his fathers place.

Jabez Atherton was eldest son of Cornelius Atherton; the latter was drafted into the Army; young Jabez insisted on taking his father's place, feeling that if he (Jabez) fell, the father would remain to care for his mother and younger sibllings.
