Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Moline, where Mel was a member, with burial to follow at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorials may be made to the Organ Fund at Holy Cross Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.
Mel was born April 26, 1924, in Fond du Lac County, Wis., a son of Fred and Olga (nee Haberkorn) Wollenburg. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, and married Norma (nee Rethmeier) in St. Louis in 1946.
He retired from Burroughs Corp. as district sales manager in 1981 and served tirelessly in several capacities at Immanuel and Holy Cross Lutheran churches.
Mel is survived by his wife, Norma; five children (and spouses), Janice (Jerry) Tutskey, Rock Island, Bill (Jackie) Wollenburg, Urbandale, Iowa, John (Debbie) Wollenburg, Viola, Bob (Patti) Wollenburg, Moline, and Jim Wollenburg, Rock Island; seven grandchildren, John (Heidi) Sias, Kate (Josh Mills) Wollenburg, Anne Sias, Jennifer Wollenburg, Robert Wollenburg, Rebekah Wollenburg, and Amy Wollenburg; sisters, Ora Stuebs, Onalaska, Wis., Lucile Neumann and Delores Mueller, both of Oshkosh, Wis.; and a brother, Arlyn Wollenburg, Kingston, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Richard Sias.
