Nearly a Centenarian - S. Gaston, A 99 Year Old Pioneer Nears the Divide...
The many friends of S. Gaston, an esteemed pioneer of Thayer County, will be pained to learn that he is quite low, with no hopes for his recovery, since he suffered a stroke, a week ago last Saturday. He is unconscious, and takes no nourishment. Grandpa Gaston is 99 years old, and we had earnestly hoped he would live to reach the century mark.

Samuel Gaston was born in Pennsylvania, March 2, 1818 and died at Hebron, Nebr., Dec. 15 1916, aged 98 years, 10 months and 15 days. He was married to Katherine Adams, Jan 16, 1840. To this union ?? children were born, six of whom are living - Mary C. Milton, Moline, Ill., Jane R. Vincent, Moline, Ill., Lucinda Davidson, Leavenworth, Kans., Jefferson Gaston Alexandria, Nebr., Merlson and Frank Gaston, Hebron, Nebr. Mrs. Gaston died March 28, 1902. Mr. Gaston with his family moved to Iowa in 1853, and from there to Nebraska in 1873. They settled on a homestead about five miles east of Hebron where he made his home until about twelve years ago, when he moved to Hebron where he lived with his son Frank until his death. Mr. Gaston united with the Presbyterian church when but a child. The funeral was held from the residence Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. M.M. Long of the Methodist church.
