Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Wars with the Plains Indians as Major of the 1st United States Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in the Lava Beds, California, on January, 17 1873. His citation reads "In order to reassure his command, this officer, in the most fearless manner and exposed to very great danger, walked in front of the line; the command thus encouraged, advanced over the lava upon the Indians who were concealed among the rocks". His Medal was awarded to him on November 18, 1897. He eventually recieved the brevet of Brigadier General, US Regular Army for his military service.
