Florence L. Abbott died peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at her home in Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of 95. She was born on August 29, 1915 in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of Charles and Una Dale. She graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit.

In 1944 Florence enlisted in the United States Navy as a Wave. She received her basic training in Hunters, New York and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. Her duties included accounting and bookkeeping. After her discharge in 1946, she continued to work for the Navy as a civilian and eventually met her future husband, John. They were married in 1949 at the Riverside Lutheran Church in Detroit. Their beginning years, while John was still in the Navy, took them to Great Lakes, Illinois; San Diego, California and finally back to Detroit.

Mrs. Abbott was employed as a bookkeeper at the Lutheran High School Association. She was the secretary for the Southeast Michigan Waves Association. Florence was actively involved in many groups at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Detroit, where she was a member until her death. In 1986 she was received the honor of being named the Lutheran Woman of the Year.

Florence was described as a quiet, stoic, wonderful woman. She loved animals of all types and frequently cared for pets while family member's were on vacation or away at college. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her family. She lived a faith filled life and set an example for her family.

Mrs. Abbott is survived by her children, Linda Powers (Thom), Matthew (Jan) and Patricia Abbott; grandchildren, Christy, David, Cher, Megan and Allysa; and a great-grandson, William. She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, John, in 1998.

The funeral for Florence will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 19, 2010 at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. Rev. Prouty, Pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church, will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday with a Waves Ritual Service at 5:00 p.m. Interment at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, Michigan.

The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to SPCA International , Florence's favorite charity caring for animals.
