"Samuel Everette Montgomery, 68, died on November 15, 2010 with his family by his side. A graveside service will be held Thursday, November 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Quaker Cemetery. Father Douglas Holmes of Grace Episcopal Church will officiate.
"Sam died on Monday, November 15, 2010 and was born in Monroe, N.C. to the late Samuel Everette Montgomery and the late Rachel Stearns Montgomery, he was the husband of Eve Barbara Renne Montgomery. He graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. degree in Economics and was, for most of his career, engaged in books – first as a collector of books, then as a publishers' representative and later as an independent bookstore owner. He had a passion for collecting rare and out of print books which he did over the past 40 years. His biggest thrill was to find a rare book during his travels. In recent years, he, along with his wife, Eve, owned Kirkwood Books, a charming bookstore in downtown Camden which was run for the love of this community as the foundation for the endeavor.
"He grew up in Camden the son of a "Duponter" and his mother the author of Historic Camden and a writer for the Camden Chronicle. He graduated from Camden High School in 1960 and celebrated his 50th reunion with Dear Friends in May of this year. He played basketball, football, and tennis for Camden High School. He had a charm and charisma that were hard to resist.
"Sam was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where he was a lay reader and member of the Vestry. He was a past president of the Kershaw County Historical Society and also a member of Springdale Hall Club. An avid Clemson fan and supporter, Sam was proud to have sent both his children to his alma mater. He is watching over in hopes his grandchildren will follow suit. In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by his daughter, Elisabeth Miles Montgomery Jordan (Scott Jordan), and son Michael Renne Montgomery (Beth Shaw); and grandchildren Campbell Jordan, Renne Jordan, Grace and Madison Montgomery, all of Camden. He is also survived by his sister Rachel Montgomery Haynie, and nephew Douglas Ellerbe Haynie (Kristin Hinkle) of Marietta, Georgia and his aunt Neva (Coota) Montgomery and cousin William Frank Montgomery Jr. (Jo Young) also of Camden. Lastly, his faithful English Springer Spaniel, Sally who worked with him at the bookshop, survives him. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday November 17 at Kornegay Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Grace Episcopal Church and the Fine Arts Center of Camden."
