Willie, a native of Limestone, Tennessee, attended the United States Naval Academy, class of 1957. At graduation he chose to join the U.S. Air Force, where he was later assigned to fly the F-104 aircraft. Sadly, on a high-altitude training mission near Moses Lake, Washington, he was lost when his aircraft crashed. He was likely incapacitated by hypoxia due to a malfunctioning oxygen/mask system.
