Medical Pioneer. He was an accomplished engineer who had 63 patented inventions before he became involved in heart valves. The inventions ranged from a hydraulic tree-barking system for the Weyerhaeuser Company, to a high altitude booster bump that was used in aircraft engines in WWII. It's been quoted that at one time, Mr. Edwards pumps were in 85% of military aircraft. In 1958, at the age of 65, Mr. Edwards approached famous heart surgeon Dr. Albert Starr and proposed building an artificial heart. Dr. Starr suggested they begin with a single valve, and less than 2 years later (1960) they achieved the first successful replacement of a human mitral valve. Three years later, they achieved a triple valve replacement. The valve is called the Starr-Edwards valve, and by 1998 had been used on 175,000 patients.
