HUNT - Leon Treiber, 69, of Hunt, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be led by the Rev. Joseph Fegenbush at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in the Grimes Funeral Home Chapel in Kerrville.

Interment will follow immediately in Nichols Cemetery with a reception to follow at Camp La Junta in Hunt.

Treiber was born Feb. 8, 1941, on Kelly Creek between Ingram and Hunt, the son of Michael and Selma (Poochie) Pumphrey Treiber.

He married Dora Treiber on Nov. 2, 1961, and she survives.

He also is survived by a son and daughter, their spouses and his grandchildren: Chris and Shannon Treiber, Dayzee and Toby of Hunt; and Michael and Lisa Treiber Walter and Austin of Fredericksburg.

Additional survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Joe T. (Tommy) and Nell Meyer, and a sister and brother-in-law, Bobby and Judy Beaver, all from the Kelly Creek area in Ingram, as well as a niece and nephews.

Pallbearers will include Michael and Austin Walter of Fredericksburg, Dr. Billy Crookshank of Lakes Charles, La., Tommy Taylor of Harper, Rick Nispel of Carrollton and Chuck Ward of Benton, Ark.

Honorary pallbearers are John Wootters, B.J. Crookshank, Butch Gregory, David Treiber, Sparky Murray and Bobby Blackburn.

Treiber graduated from Tivy High School as a member of the Class of 1960. During that time, he was a member of the First Place National FFA (Future Farmers of America) Meats Judging Team and the 1958 State 4-H Round-Up State Rifle Match Championship Team.

He studied business in an Austin college before beginning his longtime career as a custom builder in Kerrville and the surrounding Texas Hill Country and beyond. He was an avid outdoorsman, sharing with family and friends his love of hunting and fishing, for which he made numerous trips to Colorado and to the Texas and Louisiana coastlines.

Treiber achieved even more recognition for his keen marksmanship skills in adulthood as a member and leader in the Buck N Bull Club of Kerrville. He claimed that organization's Grand Aggregate Champion's revolving trophy from 1974-1982 and again in 1985, for having won numerous positional shoots and other contests.

He was a private pilot, achieving his first solo flight in May 1977 at the Kerrville Municipal Airport and enjoying many years of flying his own airplane across the country.

Treiber not only enjoyed, but became accomplished at habitat conservation and cattle ranching, woodworking, metal machining, photography, scuba diving, blasting and more.

In his later years, Treiber became well known as one of the premier knife makers in the nation and some of his intrinsically detailed, artistic folding knives were featured in spreads by such publications as Blade and Knives Illustrated magazines, the Knife World publication, as well as such books as "Knives: Points of Interest," "500 Knives" and "Knife World."

He was a director of the Texas Knifemakers and Collectors Association and at its 2009 show in Round Rock, his knives captured both the Central Texas Knife Show's "Best of Show Award" and the "Henry Rabke Best Mammoth Ivory Folder Award." Earlier this year, he also won the Arkansas Custom Knife Show's "Best Folder Award."
