U. S. Congressman. Ben Taylor Cable served in the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat from the Illinois 10th Congressional District to the Fifty-second Congress, which was from March 4, 1891 to March 3, 1893. In 1892, he declined to be a candidate for another term as his district was mainly Republican. Cable missed 177 of 304 roll call votes, which is 58.2%. Born in Kentucky, his family relocated to Illinois when he was three years old. He was the son of Philander Lathrop Cable and his wife Mary Jane Taylor. He was educated in public schools and Racine College, which is now the University of Wisconsin at Parkland. He was graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1876, married Maria Benton in 1882 and the couple resided in France for some time. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, co-owner of a ranch owner near San Antonio, Texas and also became interested in various manufacturing enterprises. He retired as the president of a railroad company. He served as chairman of the western branch of the Democratic National Committee in 1892; chairman of the Democratic executive committee in 1902; and after being congressman, served as delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1904.
