PROMINENT CITIZEN LAID TO REST
Adam Smith Passes to Reward After Long and Useful Life – Well Known in Loup County
After thirty-five years during which time he was a prominent figure in business, fraternal and political circles, Adam Smith has answered the call of Him who rules the world and yesterday afternoon was followed to his grave in the cemetery west of town by brothers and friends of more than a third of a century. He died as he always lived, respected by all who knew him and loved by those who knew him best., During the past few years failing health has made changes in his disposition but when not suffering from illness he was the same Uncle Adam up to the last and was found so by the friends who visited him within a week of his death. His funeral held from the Methodist church yesterday was conducted by pastor, Dr. Shick, assisted by Rev. Knight of the Christian Church. The Masons, of which deceased was a prominent member, were in charge of the ceremonies at the grave and marched in a body to the funeral. The G.A.R. and ladies of the G.A.R. also attended in a body and had a part, with their beautiful exercises at the church.
Adam Smith was born in Newport Ky. November 28, 1835. When he was two and one-half years old his parents moved to Knox County, Indiana, then almost a wilderness, living three and one-half miles from the nearest neighbor. When he was thirteen years of age he took charge of the farm, his father being a cripple. On reaching manhood he was united in marriage at the age of twenty-two years to Catherine Blanset. The fruits of this union were four children two of who died in infancy: the others are Mrs. Rosa B. Pierson of Ord, Neb. and George E. Smith of Grant, Neb. On July 31, 1861, he enlisted in Company B, 26th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was discharged from service at Vicksburg, Miss., Jan 26, 1866; having served for four years and six months.
In the spring of 1866, he again began farming. In 1883 he came with his family to Nebraska and located in Mira Valley where he was engaged in farming and stock raising until February 19, 1893, when his beloved wife departed this life. On Sept. 23, 1894 he was married to Rachel Polk. In the fall of 1895 he was elected as sheriff of Valley County in which office he served four years. His second wife died April 9, 1905 and on July 3, 1907 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Anna R. Purman who, with his two children, survive him.
He was a member of the G.A.R., the Masonic Order and of the Methodist church. To the latter he gave many years of service, being specially interested in the foreign missionary work of the Kingdom. Advancing year s and physical disability made it impossible for him to participate actively in the work of the church during recent years, but he maintained his interest therein until the last. After long illness he peacefully departed this life April 29, 1918.
