Lieutenant Eidson led a five man patrol into the enemy stronghold to obtain information about their disposition, strength, capabilities and supplies, all necessary for future operations in that sector. For six days he led his patrol thru enemy held positions, traveling thru almost impassable mountain trails and dense vegetation during tropical storms, taking up observation posts under the enemy noses, all under constant threat of discovery by the enemy. The daring initiative, aggressiveness, and superior leadership which this officer displayed resulted in obtaining information vital to future operations in this sector."; promoted to Capt. 19 Jan.
