Laura Maye Chandler Dobbs, 99, of Woodstock, Georgia passed away September 12, 2009 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice. The funeral service will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, September 17th in the Woodstock Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Sven Mossinger will officiate. Burial will follow in Little River United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until service time on Thursday. Mrs. Dobbs was born on March 21, 1910 in Woodstock, Georgia to Claude E. and Laura Maye Chandler. Maye's mother died when she was two weeks old and she was raised by her father, step-mother, Maude, her grandmother, Amanda Edwards and her uncle, Walter Chandler. After graduating from Georgia State College for Women in 1929, Maye began her teaching career at age 19 at Mountain View School. She taught briefly at Woodstock Elementary before retiring from Blackwell Elementary School in Cobb County after teaching fourth grade there for many years. Maye was an accomplished pianist and organist, playing for churches from the time she was a very young girl. She had the ability to play nearly any song by ear and she gave freely of her talent playing for weddings, funerals and social events. Sunday lunch at Reinhardt College's Gordy Center was one of the last places Maye played the piano. Maye was actively involved with many community organizations. She had a love for children and founded the first teen club in Woodstock and was active in her two daughters' schools. One organization Maye was most proud of was her membership and work with the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Dobbs was preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Dobbs, Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Dobbs Morrell (Bill) and Amanda Granger (Ralph); grandchildren, Laurie Granger Howard (Kenneth), Les Granger (Trish) and Jon Granger; two great-grandchildren, Zach and Katie Howard, all of Marietta, GA. Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.
