Obituary: James Arthur Mahaffey, son of John and Mary Mahaffey, was born in Illinois on September 25, 1871. At the age of 14 years, he came with his parents to Thayer County, NEbraska in a covered wagon. They lived some years northeast of Hebron and later Northwest of Chester. He was married to Calldonia Strow on July 30, 1894. This union was blessed with five children, three daughters and two sons. For the past 48 years, they have lived on a farm northeast of Hebron. He loved the farm life and was an industrious and successful farmer, a good neighbor, a kind and good husband and father. The past year, he had been in failing health and spent several months in the hospital. He suffered an acute heart attack and passed away in a Lincoln hospital on October 14, 1948 at the age of 77 years and 19 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his invalid wife Calldonia, three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Wassom, of Hebron, Mrs. Beulah Higel of Bruning, Mrs. Gladys Wassom of Hubbell, two sons, James of Hebron and Earnest of Alexandria, also a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Guy of Los Angeles, California and Clarence of Sterling, Colorado, and one sister, Mrs. Lulu Mathieson of Hebron besides many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the McGrue and Montgomery Funeral Home at Hebron at 2:00pm on Sunday October 17th, 1948. The services were conducted by his former pastor, Rev. W.H. Clark of Fairbury. Internment at Rose Hill Cemetery near Hebron.
