The son of John Hendry and Charlotte Grant. William was born at Banff, Banffshire, Scotland.

He immigrated from Oyne, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to Ontario, Canada in 1870.

William married Margaret B. Sim on 1 Jan 1874 at Fergus Twp., Wellington County, Ontario. Their marriage ceremony was performed by Presbyterian Reverend J. B. Mullaw on New Years Day at the Manse. Their witnesses were David Robie of Luther and Jane Ann Sim of Arthur.

William and Margaret lived at Gordonville for a few years, then in 1886 moved through the bush to a farm on Lot 26, Con. 12, Proton. They had children named Jennie Ann, Robert John, Agnes Glennie, Margaret Beatrice, William Grant, Francis Leopold, Christena May and Nellie Steele. They were Presbyterian and Liberal.

William had been a successful farmer. He died at Lot 26 Con. 12 of pleurisy for one week complicated by neurasthenia for a year and a half.
