Miss Jean Galt, 88, a native of Traer, died Thursday morning, March 21, in the Memorial Center for Women, a retirement home at West Orange, New Jersey after an illness of only two days. After services at West Orange, her body was returned to Traer for a committal service, in Buckingham cemetery. It was conducted by the Rev. Glenn R. Dieken, pastor of United Presbyterian church. Arrangements for the Traer service were made by the Overton Funeral home. Here for the burial service were her nephew, David McCornack of Short Hills, New Jersey, his sister, Mrs. John Schmonsees, the former Margaret McCornack, both formerly of Traer, and the son and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. G. McCornack. They arrived by plane Saturday, returned home Monday and were guests in the home of the Gordon Smiths. Gordon was also a nephew of Miss Galt.

Jean Galt is the last of the family of Mr. and Mrs. David Galt. She was born on their farm northwest of Traer, March 31, 1885, and graduated from Traer high school in 1901. She attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, graduating in 1907. Jean was a teacher in schools in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Redwood Falls, Minnesota, as a young woman. She also taught in Traer high school. Her teaching duties were interrupted when she returned to Traer to care for her aging parents.

Her father, David Galt, had come to the Traer community with his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Galt in 1856. They farmed 300 acres in Buckingham township. David Galt was a livestock farmer many years. Six children were born near Traer. The daughter Jean went to Washington D. C. in 1918 and was there employed many years by the U. S. Veterans Administration, a work in which she was efficient and enjoyed. For a time after her retirement, she continued to live in Washington D.C. and about fifteen months ago entered the West Orange, New Jersey nursing home. It was not far from the homes of David McCornack and Margaret McCornack Schmonsees, who visited her frequently. Jean appeared to be in good health until about two days before her unexpected death.

Jean's father, David was married twice, first to Janette Bovee. She died many years ago leaving a young son William J. Galt, who was reared by his grandmother, Mrs. John Galt. William lived in Des Moines many years until his death several years ago. David Galt's second wife was Mary McCormick. When David Galt died in Traer in 1924, five of their six children were living. Jean was the youngest and was the last to be taken. Three daughters including Jean were teachers at various times in the Traer school system. Esma, a high school teacher, later married William G. McCornack, Traer banker. Mrs. McCornack was the second woman to be elected a member of the Traer school board.

Another of the Galt sisters was Flora, a much beloved teacher of Traer children for several years in the 4th grade. Flora married John M. Sloane. She died several years ago at Maple Valley, Washington. Jean was a high school teacher of unusual ability.
