John attended Patterson schools, and enlisted in the US Army on 20 Apr 1944, at the Presidio of Monterey. He was discharged on 4 May 1946. He was a member of the Elijah B. Hayes American Legion Post 168, serving twice as commander. A farmer for many years before retiring, he also was a member of Operating Engineer Local 3.
Survivors included his wife, two sons, two daughters, four sisters, a brother, and 13 grandchildren.
