John was born and raised in what was then West Troy which today is now Green Island and Watervliet. John was named after his father and grandfather.
He is believed to be John H. Peppin who entered Fairview Home For Friendless Children of Watervliet at age 4 on July 29, 1895 after his father died suddenly from a Labor accident resulting in the mangling of his hand. He was brought to the home by his sister Lottie E. PEPIN. The E standing for Ellen.
He was the son of John PEPIN and Cassa/Cassie CUTTER.
The PEPIN family were one of the first families to settle West Troy and Green Island.
Shortly after turning age 16 he was apprenticed to a Farmer in Saratoga to learn a trade and released.
John was a veteran of World War I in the 328th United States Army Ambulance Corp; Of The 307th Division/82nd Division as a PFC.

He also enlisted and served in World War II with the US Air Corps as a Mechanic.
John was known to be a Auto-Mechanic as well as a Farmer. He married Lyle Pratt Valentine, fathering two sons.
