John George Lowden passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at his home in Columbus, with his loving family by his side. He was 81.

Born in Burlington, he was a longtime resident of the Columbus community.

John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Yosemite during World War II and the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

He was employed as a crane operator with PSE&G, and retired in 1983 after 28 years of dedicated service.

John was a member of the American Legion Post 194 in Florence, and Veteran of Foriegn Wars Post 8838 of Roebling. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church of Bordentown.

Known to all as a "history buff," he was an avid reader who enjoyed watching Phillies games, and spending time gardening with his beloved wife, Joan.

He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and will be greatly missed by his family.

The son of the late Gordon and Helen Lowden, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan M. Lowden; his brothers, Richard and Thomas Lowden; and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Norman Green.

John is survived by his loving children, JoAnn and Gary Bruce, Paul M. and Sandy Martin, Deborah L. and Richard Peters, John G. Jr. and Carol E. Lowden, Donna M. Lowden, Janice M. and Robert Polizzi, Patricia E. and David Kuhn, Denise A. and James Beach; his 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Betty Mary Lowden, Joseph and Lorraine Lowden, Frances and Susan Lowden; his sisters, Rita Lowden and Sister Eileen Lowden RSM; his sisters-in-law, Lorraine and Wilaburga Lowden; his brothers-in-law, Robert and Fredrick Stokley and his sister-in-law, Claudette Stokley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 45 Crosswicks St., Bordentown. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's name to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, N.J. 08053-3101 [email protected]
