Daughter of Luke and Lucy Ann (Miner) Miner. Mary was married 3 times, with children from each marriage. Her first marriage was to Richard Harris, with the ceremonies held in Lenox Township of Warren county on 5 August 1855, conducted by her uncle, Rev. Erastus Miner. That marriage produced one daughter, Lucy Ann Harris, in 1857. What became of Richard is not yet known. Daughter Lucy was listed in the 1860 census with her Miner grandparents, while her parents were not found. Lucy's obituary claimed her father left to fight in the Civil War, and never returned. Mary, however, remarried prior to the out-break of the Civil War.

Mary's second marriage was to Isaac Jaycox in Warren county on 1 January 1861. Daughters Ida Mae and Ella Jaycox were born to the couple. Isaac died 17 August 1868.

Finally, Mary married David Van Tassell in Warren county on 2 June 1870. This marriage produced a son, Frankie, and a daughter, Alice, who both died as infants. The couple did take in a number of other children, though, and adopted at least one. David died in Monmouth on 29 September 1888.

Mary died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lucy Ann (Harris) Messenger, at 1055 East Fifth Avenue. She had been affected with heart trouble for a number of years.
